Carlisle Indian Industrial School (nov 1, 1879 – nov 1, 1918)

Description:

The flagship boarding school set out to achieve General Richard Henry Pratt’s mission to “kill the Indian and save the man”, the Carlisle Indian Industrial School in Carlisle, Pennsylvania “enrolled” an estimated 12,000 Native American children in its 39 years of operation. Only 758 were reported to have graduated. Harsh discipline and recurrent epidemic diseases contributed to a cruel environment for the children, with over 180 children dying during their time at Carlisle and many attempting to flee. Over the course of the 39 years, there were 1,758 reported runaways. The spread of such boarding schools was a blatant attempt at forcing Indigenous people to assimilate into American culture.
