Post-Impressionism (jan 1, 1885 – jan 1, 1910)

Description:

Toward the late 1800s, artists independently began desiring more self expression within their work. A desire to express inward emotion and individual perception rather than what is simply presented to them by the outside world.

The artists and work that emerged during this time were a product of what is now known as Post-Impressionism. Iconic artists such as Vincent van Gogh, Paul Gauguin, and Georges Seurat were some of the more prolific artists to come out of the Post-Impression movement.

Post-Impressionism, a diverse movement responding to Impressionism, encompassed styles like Pointillism, Cloisonnism, Japonisme, Primitivism, Symbolism, and Neo-Impressionism, emphasizing expression, symbolism, and individual artistic vision over pure representation.

It is characterized by a focus on subjectivity, emotion, and symbolism, often employing vivid colors, thick brushstrokes, and a departure from realistic representation in favor of personal expression and structural emphasis.

While known for its diverse styles, saw artists like Van Gogh and Cézanne primarily use oil paint on canvas to express their unique visions, often with techniques like impasto (thick paint application) and vibrant colors.
