1883 Eruption of Krakatoa (may 20, 1883 – oct 21, 1883)
Description:
Krakatoa, a volcanic island in the Sunda Strait, experienced multiple eruptions from May to October 1883. The most destructive eruption occurred on 27 August, destroying over 70% of the island and its surrounding archipelago. The eruption had an estimated Volcanic Explosivity Index of 6, making it one of the deadliest and most destructive events in recorded history. The explosion was heard 3,110 kilometers away in Perth, Western Australia, and 4,800 kilometers away in Rodrigues near Mauritius. The acoustic pressure wave circled the globe more than three times, causing at least 36,417 deaths. Additional effects were felt worldwide in the days and weeks after the eruption.
