1949 Armistice Agreements (jan 6, 1949 – jul 20, 1949)
Description:
Ceasefire announced; Israeli and four Arab delegations hold talks in Rhodes
Four Agreements reached drawing armistice lines, demilitarized zones and borders: Egypt, Syria, Jordan and Lebanon
The provisions are not to be interpreted as delineating political or territorial boundaries or affecting the ultimate settlement of the Palestinian question
Israel withdrew to a new border between the western Negev and the Sinai, leaving Gaza under Egyptian control
Jordan was left with the West Bank and East Jerusalem, including the holy sites. It conceded land in the Southern Negev, and Israel also received Wadi Ara and the “little triangle”
With Lebanon, the line was drawn along the international boundary of Palestine, based on the 1947 Partition Plan
Syria withdrew but areas became demilitarized and Israel could not apply its sovereignty there
A special committee was established to address outstanding issues
