Ajanta Caves (jan 1, 100 BC – jan 1, 480)
Description:
There are 30 caves, including the unfinished ones. 5 of them are sanctuaries and the rest are monasteries. 6 of the caves were firstly excavated by Hinayana/Theravadin followers of Buddhism, where he was worshiped in a symbolic form. Those caves are austere and carry sparse mural paintings, while Mahayana followers of Buddhism, where Buddha was worshiped in an icon/idol form, reused the older caves and made several new ones, which had exquisite mural paintings and detailed sculptures.
