Old English (jan 1, 600 – jan 1, 1066)
Description:
This is the period when Old English was spoken. It developed into later forms of English as well as Scots which is a distinct language spoken in southern Scotland. This period is characterized by a great deal of contact with Scandinavian peoples who left an influence on the language. The end of the Old English period is usually delineated at the Battle of Hastings which marks the beginning of French influence on the language.
