Treaty of Nanking (aug 29, 1842 – aug 29, 1842)
Description:
The Treaty of Nanking was an agreement that ended the First Opium War between China and Britain. As a result of China’s defeat, the treaty forced China to open five ports to British trade, cede Hong Kong to Britain, and pay a large indemnity. The treaty is a clear example of imperialism, as it reflects how Western powers, particularly Britain, used military force to impose economic and territorial control over a weaker nation.
