June 16 strikes occured in GDR for increased pay, political indep., & reestablishing the German Social Democratic Party100K ppl protested in East Berlin
June 17 Soviet troops suppressed uprising = 125 killed
Eisenhower didn’t interfere w/ Soviet suppression — hoped uprising would instill West German fear over USSR & re-elect Adenauer
Beria = arrested & executed for causing uprising
