Description:
- The United States feared that Allende, (socialist/marxist president of Chile) would create a communist government in the country.
- The US, fearing the domino effect developed economic pressure and covert operations through the CIA over Chile in order to stop Allende.
- Plan Condor was a campaign of political repression and state terrorism backed by several US governments that included intelligence operations and the assassination of communist or possible communists opponents over Latin America.
- On September 11, 1973, the Chilean military, led by General Augusto Pinochet, started the
Coup d’etat.
- Allende died during the coup, and Pinochet established a military dictatorship that lasted until 1990. The regime was marked by widespread human rights abuses, including the persecution of political opponents, forced disappearances, and torture.
