Description:
A paper by Maaten van Houten titled "Interpersonal issues in knowledge sharing: the impact of professional discretion in knowledge sharing and learning communities" uses social exchange theory to study the behaviour of teachers and the exchange of knowledge. Eighteen teachers in secondary schools were questioned in interviews. Van Houten's paper found that the interpersonal issues of the teachers influenced their decisions to withhold information from their fellows, which he found resulted in those same teachers failing to properly foster professional development and share information.
