Independence of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (jun 3, 1960 – jan 1, 1965)
Description:
The Democratic Republic of the Congo became independant on June 3rd 1960 from the Belgians. Within five days the country descended into chaos and the Belgians came back to intervene. The DROC military revolted because they wanted higher pay and they wanted the white man out of their country. The DROC government made a deal with the UN the remove the Belgian military and to send peacekeepers from UN nations. As all this was happening the Soviets atempted to take control of the government and were almost successful yet the old conganeese government staged a coup and successfully removed the Soviets from power. This was a large move towards the west that created better relations with western countries. Overall this move twards the west settled the country down for a short period of time.
