Iranian Hostage Crisis (nov 4, 1979 – jan 20, 1981)
Description:
The Iranian Hostage Crisis began on Noverber 4, 1979 and ended January 20, 1981 (444 days). In the years ahead of this event the Iranian islamic revolution occured and this event greatly altered the relations between the US and Iran. With this suddden change in power some Iranian leaders were opposed to the United States’s presence in Iran. The leaders assembled a mob of about 3000 people in which some were armed; they then stormed the US embassy and took 66 hostages. In the weeks following the US and Iranian officials made deals to release the hostages but when the orders by the Iranian higher-ups were given the hostages were not released. It was concerning that there was no one who could release the hostages. When Iraq invaded Iran the embargoes that were put on Iran began to hurt. Due to this negotiations opened back up and on January 20th, 1981 minutes after Reagan was inaugurated the hostages were released.
