Korean War (1950) (jun 25, 1950 – jul 27, 1953)

Description:

The Korean War first commenced in June of 1950. At the end of WWII Korea was split into two parts. The South was controlled by the United States, and the North was controlled by the Soviet Union as communists. This divide was one of the first “proxy wars” in the Cold War. North Korea made the first move by crossing the 38th parallel, the border into South Korea on June 25th, 1950. They were led by Kim II-sung a North Korean politician and military leader. Attempting to stop the expansion of communism the United States joined to aid South Korea. The United Nations broke its way into North Korea causing China to send men to help defend. The battle intensifies with neither side showing a lead creating a bloody stalemate. July 27, 1953, both sides were extremely tired and agreed on a cease-fire. There were no agreements or peace treaties signed. The country remained split ending the first big proxy war between the Soviet Union and the United States. South Korea remained led by Syngman Rhee, as a democracy. North Korea was communist-led by Kim II-sung.
