Description:
The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in June 1914 was the immediate cause of World War I. The Archduke, heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, was killed by a Serbian nationalist. Austria-Hungary, with the support of Germany, issued an ultimatum to Serbia, and when Serbia did not fully comply, Austria-Hungary declared war. Russia, allied with Serbia, mobilized its forces, and Germany declared war on Russia. This chain of events quickly escalated into a world war as the complex system of alliances in Europe was triggered.
