The Second Congo War (aug 2, 1998 – jul 18, 2003)

Description:

On Aug 2 1998, the 2nd Congo War/Africa's World War began, just over a year after the 1st Congo War, when Congolese president Laurent-Desire Kabila turned against his former allies from Rwanda and Uganda, who had helped him seize power.
The conflict eventually expanded and drew in 9 African nations and 25 armed groups. Troops from Rwanda and Uganda supported rebel groups against Congo.
Congo's President Laurent Kabila was assasinated in Jan 2001, and his son, Joseph Kabila took power.
Although a peace agreement was signed in 2002, and the war ended on 18 July 2003 with the establishment of the Transitional Gov of the DRC, violence has persisted, with rebel groups controlling regions.
