Description:
The bloodiest battle of World War 1.
The battle was planned to weaken the Germans.
The allied forces were victorious, though the victory was overshadowed by the amount of lives lost during the battle.
Combined British Empire and French forces lost about 620,000 men. German forces lost about 500,000 men.
Of the 66,000 Canadians to die during WWI, 24,000 of them died during the Somme.
