Description:

1st cousin (once removed) of Fedor I. Yaroslav II was his 10th Great-Grandfather on his Mother's side.

Elected by a boyar council: 1) Youth; easy to control. 2) Close relation to Fedor I. 3) His father had authority among clergy. 4) His father had been accepted in the camp of False Dmitry II. This hoped to appeal to those followers. 5) The Romanov family wasn't tainted with ties to Poland 6) Ivan IV's wife (Michael's great aunt) was loved and remembered fondly, as was his Grandfather.
