Invasion of the Island of Melos (jan 1, 416 BC – jan 1, 416 BC)
Description:
The invasion of Melos occurred during the summer of 416 BCE, the sixteenth year of the Peloponnesian War, when Athens had invaded Melos due to their neutral stance between the conflict of Sparta and Melos. Though Melos had been one of Sparta’s colonies, they had remained an impartial stance. The neutral stance was deemed unacceptable to Athenians who invaded Melos and demanded the Melians to support the Athenians which they had initially refused. However, the Melians had surrendered to Athenians during the winter which led to the death of men of Melos and the enslavement of women and children of Melos.
