Ethnic cleansing in Darfur
("ended" a year after my birthday birthday) (mar 1, 1985 – jun 1, 2011)
Description:
The civil war in Sudan lasted for over 20 years, fueled by religious and ethnic differences between the mainly Muslim, Arab north and the Christian and animist south. The war, which caused over 2 million deaths and displaced millions, ended in 2005 with the Comprehensive Peace Agreement. However, violence continued in Darfur after a 2003 rebel attack. The Sudanese government responded by backing Arab militias, the Janjaweed, who killed 400,000 people, raped women, and displaced millions. In 2004, the violence was recognized as genocide. In 2009, the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for President Omar al-Bashir. In 2011, South Sudan became independent, but violence continues in Sudan, leaving millions in need of aid.
