Sokullu Mehmet Pasha (jan 1, 1505 – jan 1, 1579)
Description:
Sokullu Mehmet Pasha was recruited into Ottoman service through child-tributions levied in the Balkans. He rose to the rank of high admiral of the fleet and later became governor-general of Rumelia. He commanded the forces of Selim, Suleyman’s son, in his fight with his brother Bayezid over succession to the throne. He then married the victorious Selim’s daughter. As the Ottoman grand vizier under Selim ll, Mehmet favored peace and opposed Ottoman entry into war with Venice and Iran. After Selim’s death, he lost power and was assassinated.
