Babarosa (jan 1, 1478 – jan 1, 1546)
Description:
Babarosa was an Ottoman corsair. His hatred for the Spanish and Portuguese who had attacked North Africa encouraged Babarosa and his brother to intensify their piracy. They hoped to claim an African domain for themselves, however his brother was killed. Babarosa, who was his brother's lieutenant, assumed the title Khayr-al-Din. Fearing that he would lose his possessions to the Spanish, Babarosa offered homage to the Ottoman Sultan. In return, he was granted a title and received military reinforcements. He was able to capture Algier in 1529. He was appointed admiral in chief of the Ottoman Empire in 1533 and went on to conquer the whole of Tunisia
