The Habsburg Dynasty (jan 1, 1282 – jan 1, 1918)
Description:
The Habsburg dynasty was one of the chief European dynasties from the 15th to the 20th centuries. The Habsburgs ruled Austria as dukes, archdukes, and emperors and controlled Hungary, Spain, Netherlands, and Luxemburg. Frederick lV, the Habsburg King of Germany, was crowned Holy Roman Emperor in 1452, and the Habsburgs continued to hold the title until the 19th century. Many wars were fought between the Habsburgs and Ottomans from the 16th to the 18th centuries. They were dominated by land campaigns in Hungary. Eventually, Ottoman conquest left the Austrian Empire as the sole possession of the House of Habsburg. In 1683, the Habsburgs formed a coalition of European powers, the Holy League, and successfully regained control over Hungary. Tension continues between the Ottomans and Austia in the 19th century, but they never fought in a war.
