The Second Anglo-Afghan War (1878–1880) was fought between the British Empire and Afghanistan, driven by British concerns over growing Russian influence in Central Asia (the "Great Game"). The war began with a British invasion to enforce diplomatic relations and led to the Treaty of Gandamak (1879), establishing British control over Afghan foreign affairs. Although initially successful, British forces faced fierce Afghan resistance, culminating in the Battle of Maiwand and the subsequent occupation of Kabul. The conflict ended with the restoration of Abdur Rahman Khan as emir, ensuring a British-aligned Afghanistan as a buffer state against Russia.
