Poor farmers burdened with unpayable debts
- U.S. was only able to trade with gold & silver, but they have limited amounts of that
- many were unpaid veterans
Daniel Shays: leader of the rebellion
They captured courthouses
Government couldn't do anything bc no military (bc no tax)
Rebellion stopped bc of a privately funded military
