south has less infrastructure; more walking, harder to access food
telegraph; morse code, mass communication, Lincoln is able to communicate directly with the warfront

Both:
Lead bullets (mini ball): primary cause of casualties, easily breaks bones, deadly, fast reload, 600,000 casualties in the war

Advancements:
60,000 amputations during the war
not very cleanly, infection leads to gangrene
bromine used to combat gangrene
Chloroform and Ether used as anesthetics
Clara Barton sets up triage method and uses clean bandages

Camera:
shows truly how deadly the war can be, war is not romanticized
