South Carolina is the first to secede in December 1860followed by Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, | Georgia, and Louisiana in January of 1861
Texas in February
President Lincoln is not in office yet, during the lame duck era of the Buchanan presidency.
lame duck = when a new president has been elected but the old president is still in office, they don't pass any laws or do anything
