Annas
(Ananus or Ananias) (apr 19, 6 – jan 14, 15)
Description:
Annas was appointed High Priest in Jerusalem by Quirinius, the governor of Syria, but was later deposed by Valerius Gratus.
There is speculation that Jesus' parable about the Rich Man & Lazarus may actually be about Annas (as the "father") and his five sons, suggesting that they may not ever believe (see Luke 16:19-31).
Annas was also an integral part of Jesus' trial, though he was not part of the high priesthood at this point. Jesus was brought before Annas, who questioned him before sending to Caiaphas, his son-in-law (the current high priest) (Matthew 26:57-68).
Later, after Pentecost, Annas presided over the Sanhedrin when they tried Peter and John for preaching about the resurrection of Jesus (Acts 4:6).
