Description:
The Northwest Ordinance was passed by Congress on July 13, 1787. This outlined how states in the Ohio River Valley could be admitted to the Union as states. These states included Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Illinois. Under the Northwest Ordinance, these states, when admitted to the Union, would be free states. Ohio would become a free state in the Union because of this ordinance
