John of Montecorvino (Missionary campaign in China) (jan 1, 1291 – nov 1, 1316)
Description:
John of Montecorvino was an active Roman Catholic missionary and Italian Franciscan who traveled to China where he came the first archbishop of Khanbaliq. He worked to establish Christianity in China by translating the New Testament into Turkish (used in the Mongol Court), built churches, and baptized and taught young boys. However, the campaign had minimal success because east Asia was too distant for the resources available to the Roman Catholic Chruch and it already possessed long-standing sophisticated religions and cultural traditions like Confucianism, Daoism, and Buddhism.
