Cabralist Era (jan 1, 1842 – jun 1, 1846)

Description:

On January 27, 1842, António Bernardo da Costa Cabral led a bloodless coup in the city of Porto, supported by key military units and conservative factions.
The coup quickly spread to Lisbon, where it gained the backing of influential elites and segments of the military.
Costa Cabral declared the Constitution of 1826 reinstated, effectively ending the democratic aspirations of the Setembristas and replacing their governance with a more centralized, authoritarian regime.
The coup was supported by conservative elites, sections of the military, and individuals disillusioned with the Setembrista government.
The 1842 coup d'état was a decisive moment in 19th-century Portuguese history. It ended a period of radical experimentation with democracy and reasserted conservative control under the Constitution of 1826. While it brought short-term stability and modernization under Costa Cabral, it also deepened societal divisions and set the stage for further unrest, culminating in the revolts and civil wars that would plague Portugal in the years to come.
Costa Cabral became the effective ruler of Portugal as Minister of the Interior and later as Prime Minister.
