UPS Strike of 1997 (aug 4, 1997 – aug 19, 1997)
Description:
The United Parcel Service strike of 1997, led by the International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT) started on August 4, 1997, and involved over 185,000 Teamsters (IBT members). This shut down the United States Postal Service for 15 days. Pre-strike rallies were held, and a petition with 100,000 signatures of Teamster members supporting the new contract negotiations and demands of getting a higher pay. The starting pay rate of $8 per hour for part-timers was to be raised by 50 cents, while drivers were to make an additional $3.10 on top of their average $19.95 hourly rate, and part-time workers would be granted an additional $4.10 hourly.
