Reconstruction (apr 10, 1865 – apr 10, 1877)
Description:
-African Americans and Radical Republicans in the North wanted a complete transformation of the South
-war equalized classes -> lower classes had a stronger role in society
-high tariffs put in place by Republicans paid off the nation's war debt quickly
-Lincoln and Johnson granted amnesty to most ex-Confederate leaders and allowed each rebellious state to return to the Union
-power shifted to Radical Republicans - sought sweeping transformations in the defeated South
-southern blacks and northern Republican policymakers did not agree on economic matters: Republican leaders refused to grant land to freed slaves (no economic security) and reluctant to confiscate white-owned plantations
-former Confederate states were in the Union but Republican administrations in these states retained power
-southern Republicans advanced economic and cultural transformations that occurred in the North before the war
