-nativism - hostility towards immigrants; anti-catholicism
American Republican Party - temperance, anti-Catholicism, and nativism; cultural and political assault on immigrants; denied voting and office-holding rights to non-citizens
American/Know Nothing Party - native-born Protestants against the Irish and German Catholics to discourage further immigration; antislavery and free soil ideas in the North
