East Prussia Campaign (aug 13, 1914 – sep 13, 1914)
Description:
The Russians invaded exposed German East Prussia with their First Army from the east and their Second Army from the south, although these two armies did not advance in unison. A small German victory at Stalluponen (17 August) and a larger German defeat at Gumbinnen (20 August) delayed the Russian First Army. General Maximilian von Prittwitz, the German Eighth Army commander, was shaken by Gumbinnen and ordered a general retreat to the Vistula River.
