Diet of Worms (jan 31, 1521 – may 26, 1529)
Description:
A few weeks after Luther was excommunicated, he was asked to appear before the Holy Roman Empire Imperial diet in Worms. Summoned by Charles V, Luther was expected to recant his anti-papal beliefs, but he refused. He was now considered an outlaw and Catholics sought to burn his writings, capture him, and bring him to
Charles V, the Holy Roman Emperor. Fortunately, he was rescued by the troops of Frederick III of saxony and sent into hiding at Wartburg Castle.
