Description:

The Battle of Manzikert was the battle in which the Byzantines under emperor Romanus lV Diogenes were defeated by the Seljuk Turks under Sultan Alp-Arslan. The Seljuks conquered most of Anatolia, which marked the beginning of the decline of the Byzantine empire.
The battle began when Romanus assembled an army to reestablish the empire's eastern frontier after the Seljuk raided Byzantine territories. Alp-Arslan confronted him in the town of Manzikert. Romaus fought valiantly, but his forces were weakened by treachery; Some of his men went over to the enemy and others fled. The Byzantine army was defeated and Romaus was taken prisoner, but was released by Alp-Arslan after agreeing to cede Byzantine territories. On his return, he was killed by his political enemies. The weakened Byzantine empire called on its christian allies in western europe, which led to the mounting of the first Crusade.
