Suleiman the Maghnificant (jan 1, 1494 – jan 1, 1566)

Description:

Suleyman was an Ottoman Sultan who enlarged the Ottoman realm through bold military campaigns as well as oversaw the development of huge advances in law, literature, art, and architecture. Before succeeding his father as Sultan, Suleyman served as governor of Kaffa in Crimea. He began his reign by campaigning against Chrsitian powers in the Mediterranean and Europe. Belgrade and Rhodes fell to him, and after a much longer time, part of Hungary also fell. Suleyman also led several campaigns against Perisa. The first gave the Ottoman control of Erzurum in eastern Asia Minor and witnessed the Ottoman conquest of Iraq. The second brought much of the area around Lake Van under Ottoman control, but the third campaign served as a warning of the difficulty of subduing the Safavid state in Persia. The naval strength of the Ottomans became formidable under Suleyman and was felt as far as India. The later years of Suleyman were troubled by conflict between his sons over his succession. Suleyman died while besieging a fortress in Hungary.
