Description:
Constantine XI Palaeologus was the last Byzantine emperor who was killed in his defense of Constantinople against the Ottoman Turks. He was a man of courage and energy, and did everything in his power to organize the defense of the city and to gain the support of the West by showing the Greek churches obedience to Rome, but was unsuccessful. He was killed fighting at the city walls when the Ottomans broke in.Added to timeline:
