Hagia Sophia (jan 1, 325 – 22h 6min, jun 5, 2026 y)
Description:
The Hagia Sophia was a church in Istanbul that was ordered to be built by Constantine l in 325. After it burned down in the 6th century, Byzantine Emperor Justinian I built a replacement. After the Turkish conquest of Constantinople, Mehmet ll had it repurposed as a mosque. Then in 1934, Turkish President Ataturk secularized it and in 1935 it was made into a museum. President Erdogan made the controversial decision to convert it back into a mosque in 2020. The building reflects the region's religious changes over the past few centuries with its minarets and inscriptions of Islam as well as the mosaics of Christianity.
