Byzatine Empire (jul 1, 395 – jul 1, 1453)

Description:

Through conquest, the Roman empire became so large that there was a need for both a western and eastern emperor. Emperor Constantine decided to build a “new Rome'' on the banks of the Bosporus in an old Greek town called Byzantium, which became the eastern part of the Roman Empire. It was endowed by him with the name Constantinople, meaning the city of Constantine. By virtue of its location, Constantinople was a transit point between Europe and Asia Minor, allowing the Empire to control trade from the Black Sea to the Aegean. The Empire was also known for its significant advances in military strength, religious influence, and the arts, which made it one of the most powerful forces in the Middle Ages until the last Constantine fell in defense of Constantinople against the Ottoman Turks.
