First Balkan War (oct 8, 1912 – may 30, 1913)

2) The first Balkan War broke out between the Balkan League and the falling Ottoman Empire. The only great power who expressed clear opinion was France and Austro-Hungary as negative and Russia who was clearly positive in support of her Pan-Slavic ideal. Britain was ambivalent, either to preserve a last speck of “splendid solitude” it had remaining or to not oppose any Triple Entente powers in taking a stance. Austria Hungary did not want the Pan-Slavic ideal to come to life in order to hold Russia as her typical diplomatic ally in the Ottoman straits situation. If Russia was able to get access to the Mediterranean, Austria-Hungary would become obsolete.

3) Tensions were high, but none of the actively great powers were negatively affected through a key personal interest. Austria-Hungary was the one most affected as Serbia was growing larger in nationalism and size. However, it had larger troubles when it came to the Triple Alliance with Italy and Germany and resolving internal societal issues in its own empire. After the first Balkan war, Bulgaria had become a fierce competition in land growth in the Balkan, and to a point they kept Serbian content in place.
