→ seeking to break down supposed universals with "negative instances", thus supporting a cultural basis for behaviors
→ she found that Samoan adolescent girls were not stressed out, and did not have repressive feeilngs about sexuality
→ most widely read anth text up until the 1960s (and Chagnon)
-Sex and Temperament in Three Primitive Societies (1935)
→ compared gender roles in three New Guinea cultures
→ argued that gender roles are culturally constructed, not biologically determined
→ began her career as a public intellectual
Controversy:
-allegedly bad at the Samoan language, naively believed lies, and framed the Samoan experience on her own sexual desires
-had many lovers (you go girl!)
