Texas Revolution 1836 (dec 31, 1835 – jan 1, 1836)
Description:
Texas gained independence from Mexico and later joined the Union as a slave state in 1845. The addition of Texas further shifted the balance of power between free and slave states, triggering further debate about the expansion of slavery.
Texas’s annexation as a slave state aggravated the North, leading to increased anti-slavery agitation. This issue reappeared during the Mexican-American War (1846-48), as debates raged over whether new territories gained from Mexico would be free or slave-holding.
