The Jewish
Chronic Disease
Hospital Case (jun 1, 1963 – sep 1, 1963)
Description:
In the summer of 1963 Chester M. southam and Deogracias B. Custodio injected live cancer cells into 22 patients at the Jewish Chronic Disease Hospital (JCDH) to see if their immune deficiency was caused by their cancer or by other health conditions they had (Arras 2008, 73). This case has been credited as one of the most important milestones in the development of modern ethical and regulatory approaches to human research (Arras 2008, 73).
