Catholicism and Yoruba religion (jan 1, 1821 – jan 1, 1860)
Description:
Santería is a syncretic religion practiced in Cuba that blends Catholicism with the traditional Yoruba religion of West Africa. Enslaved Africans, primarily from the Yoruba ethnic group, were brought to Cuba during the colonial era. Under the forced imposition of Christianity, they incorporated elements of Catholicism into their own belief system. Yoruba deities, called orishas, were syncretized with Catholic saints. For example, Saint Barbara became associated with Shango, the orisha of thunder and lightning.
