Civil war and the Castilian intervention (jan 1, 1245 – jan 1, 1249)
Description:
King Sancho II's brother, Afonso III, is appointed the pro-curator of Portugal. This triggers a civil war between proponents of the two leaders, lasting about two years. Eventually, king Sancho II's supporters are defeated, he is exiled, and Afonso III rises to power as king himself.
As king, Afonso III reconquers the territories of the Algarve region by 1249.
