Bacon’s Rebellion (jan 1, 1676 – jan 1, 1677)
Description:
Nathaniel Bacon, a wealthy land owner in the Virginia Colony, accuses the colony governor William Berkeley of levying unjust taxes with no visible public investment, and preventing further white expansion into Native American lands. He received support from poorer farmers and landowners, as well as some enslaved people. The rebellion eventually failed, but the leaders were spooked and changed policy, reducing taxes, open up Native lands for settlement, and reduce burden on white indentured servants, drastically increasing the reliance on enslaved peoples to support the southern plantation economy.
