Description:
Elizabeth Female Academy, which is considered by some historians as the nation’s first collegiate institution for women, was founded at Washington in 1818. Jefferson College closed in 1863, when enrollment fell during the Civil War. It reopened as a preparatory school in 1866, became Jefferson Military College in the early 1900s, and closed forever in 1964
