Description:

The United Arab Republic (UAR) was a sovereign state in the Middle East from 1958 to 1961, formed by a union between Egypt and Syria. Syria seceded following a coup in 1961, but Egypt continued to use the UAR name until 1971. The union was led by Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser and was part of a larger pan-Arab movement. Despite initial enthusiasm, the union faced opposition and ultimately dissolved due to political and economic disagreements, especially over Nasser's centralized control and the exclusion of Syrian officials from power. The UAR's end came with Syria's withdrawal after a military coup, though Nasser retained ambitions for Arab unity.
