Norman Dott (aug 26, 1897 – dec 10, 1973)
Description:
Professor Norman Dott was an Edinburgh
based pioneer of intracranial aneurysm
surgery and diagnosis, and established
neurosurgery as a medical specialism in
Scotland.
He graduated from the University of
Edinburgh Medical School in 1919. He
spent the majority of his career at the
Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh.
By 1938 he was able to open Scotland’s
first dedicated neurosurgery department.
Dott also taught at the University
of Edinburgh, where he became the
institution’s first Professor of Neurological
Surgery in 1947.
In 1962 he was honoured as a Freeman
of the City of Edinburgh and was made
Emeritus Professor at the University
of Edinburgh.
